U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said today that Iran must live up to its international obligations to halt its nuclear program or the next steps are in the offing. "And I think everybody understands what the 'next steps' mean," Rice told reporters after a meeting with NATO foreign ministers and European Union officials. In his state of the union address, President Bush singled out Iran as "the world's primary state sponsor of terror -- pursuing nuclear weapons."

Imaginary knife-wielding man prompts PDX school lockdown
12:24 PM PST on Thursday, February 3, 2005

By ANTONIA GIEDWOYN, kgw.com Staff

An imaginary knife-wielding man forced a lockdown at Markham Elementary School in southwest Portland Thursday morning, police said.

Police cars surround Markham Elementary School while the building is in lockdown mode following a report of an armed man inside.

A story about a man with a knife had apparently been circulating among fourth graders for as long as the past several days, according to parents and authorities. When the story reached -- and frightened -- one fourth grade girl, she told school officials she thought there was a man wearing a mask and carrying a knife inside the school.

That prompted a police search of the building and school grounds. Approximately 20 officers responded to the scene. Police did not find anything or anyone suspicious.

Officers and school staff spoke with students and determined that the armed man was "imagined," said officer Greg Pashley with Portland Police Bureau.

"No students or staff were ever in any danger," he said.

The exact origin of the story was unclear.

"There had been stories going around about people with knives...it may have come from a movie," Pashley said.

One mother of a Markham student said her son was scared to go to school this week due to the chatter about weapons.

The lockdown lasted for about an hour.

Markham Elementary School is located at 10531 SW Capitol Hwy.

awesome weekend - just a lot of football and relaxation. Did start up my reading for today - ugh - hard to get back in the swing of things. Saw The Aviator yesterday - pretty good movie with excellent direction by Scorcese. Thought DiCaprio wasn't all that great but the supporting cast was. Very interesting guy - too bad they couldn't cover the rest of his life w/ the Vegas stuff, etc. but a 5 hour movie would be pretty grueling.

I've made a decision that drinking in the middle of the day is a really bad idea - I almost always get a migraine headache. Arghhh. 6.9% IPA at the Lompoc is a real ass-kicker by the way.

3 days until Spring Semester - a feeling of dread has settled over me.

How many times a day can I check my grades? I am going for the record.

2 more weeks of freedom [Jan. 5th, 2005|12:14 pm]
[Mood | relaxed]

I believe I may be insane - when I am only working 40 hours a week I feel as if I am still on vacation. Not having school hanging over my head is glorious. That, and the sunny weather, are keeping me in high spirits.

There is the ever present spectre of grades that I have to deal with - I am sure everything will be fine - I just wish I could get some feedback before February.

Spring semester will rock - only 3 classes - Income Tax, Crim Pro, and Con Law 2. Then only 2 more years - jesus h - will I be able to make it two more years? I really wish there were some PE classes I could take.

My holiday drinking binge has slowed down - only 2 beers last night and some jack and cokes yesterday afternoon downtown.

All of my classes for the semester seem, at first glance, to be manageable. In 3 of my 4 classes, it appears we have nearly left the common law behind and will be concentrating on statutes...how fun. First of all, you have to lug extra books around, and second, you actually have to spend time reading the code itself.

Labor day approaches, I am taking Friday off and doing something fun, not quite sure what yet, probably a little camping or maybe just a couple day trips.

It is very interesting to observe all the 1L's scrambling around campus...I wonder if that is how I appeared last year. Probably so, but it does feel good to have one year under my belt. I know what to expect and know how to prepare myself. I wonder what type of motivation I will be able to muster in year 4.

Reading assignments this weekend...my last free weekend until May. I am kind of excited for school to begin and kind of nauseated at the same time. It will be good to see everyone...well good to see most everyone. I also miss the lectures, but actually learning, that will be something I have to get used to again after a summer of utter intellectual laziness.

This is pretty bizarre. I always wonder what the judges were doing up there under those big robes.

well, all 1L grades are in as of today. Did well, at least for me, in every class except one that I wish I could have done a bit better in. Overall I am pleased and if I can just bump that ol' GPA up a little over the next couple of years, things should be peachy.

Well, tomorrow I am taking the day off and heading into the beautiful Oregon forests for a little hiking with the wife and dog. Nothing beats summer in the NW.

I absolutely have to try this sometime. Actually, I should have started barking at the fake judges during our oral arguments. That would have gone over pretty well.

PDX [May. 18th, 2004|09:39 am]
Interesting article

http://www.mensjournal.com/feature/0406/bestplaces.html

I agree San Diego is great, but look at the median income and the average house price for San Diego and Boston...this bumps Portland, Austin, and Minneapolis up in my opinion.
